Netflix is out with its latest weekly snapshot of the biggest TV shows on the platform, and the winner this week is an old favorite: It’s Outer Banks, which has dropped the first half of its highly anticipated fourth season.
The show follows a group of teenagers, the Pogues, in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, in a series that blends everything from adventure to class conflict and romance — and in a locale where there’s a clear divide between working-class locals and the wealthy elite. The Pogues set out for a treasure hunt that’s linked to the mysterious disappearance of one of their friends’ fathers. It can be a little formulaic at times, but Outer Banks overall is redeemed by a scenic setting, adventurous narrative, and engaging characters — all of which have made it Netflix’s hottest show at the moment, at #1 in both the US and worldwide.

To learn more about some of this week’s other most-watched series, you can go deeper by checking out our previous coverage of several of the Netflix originals on this list — including the romantic comedy Nobody Wants This, which Netflix just renewed for Season 2, as well as the beloved legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer. For now, though, let’s focus on the biggest Netflix TV series in the world at the moment.
Outer Banks — #1 on Netflix
Our previous coverage of Outer Banks is available right here. In short, the new season of the show (which is a Top 10 Netflix series this week in 72 countries) picks up with the Pogues having wrapped up their treasure-hunting in the Bahamas and having come back home to the Outer Banks.
The fathers of both Sarah and John B have been killed, while the friends spent almost all of their new fortune buying back JJ’s house at an auction with the dream of setting up a new “Poguelandia.” There, the gang lives and runs a bait, tackle, and charter tour shop. But, Netflix explains, “after some financial setbacks, John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo take Wes up on his offer and are drawn back into the ‘G’ game for a whole new adventure.
“But before they know it, they’re well in over their heads, with dangerous new enemies hot on their heels, racing them to the treasure. Meanwhile, their problems are only growing, and they’re forced to question their past, present, and future — who they really are, has it all been worth it, and how much are they willing to risk?”
As I noted in a previous post, the new season debuted with a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes — which is not bad at all at this stage of the game for an established show. One other thing I’ll note: It’s also impressive that Outer Banks managed to debut at #1 on Netflix worldwide last week, even though it was only streaming for four days of that week’s viewing window.
